Alan Parker is the son of Helen Parker who is mentioned in Hotel Dusk: Room 215.
Background[]
When Alan was young, he was abandoned by Helen who wanted to pursue her magician career, leaving his father to raise him.
Twenty years ago, Helen met Alan at Hotel Dusk, when the hotel had its grand opening in 1959 and hired her to perform. Their encounter was a coincidence. When she saw him, she felt fear and was concerned he would be angry at her, but Alan forgave her. After that, Helen and Alan went their separate ways, although they promised to meet again in the hotel exactly 10 years from now.
They did so in 1969. She had dinner with him and gave him a fountain pen with his name on it. They made no promises to meet up again, and Helen retired from show business soon after.
Alan frequented the same cafe as Martin Summer and they knew each other's faces well. One day, they struck up a conversation, and soon after became fast friends. Their lives were very strikingly similar; they were the same age, both reporters, were both raised by their fathers, and both longed to be novelists. Alan showed Summer a manuscript that he planned to enter in a writing contest, but Summer took it home, wrote it up himself, and entered it in the contest under his own name. Summer won and Alan disappeared, vanishing one day without a trace. The Secret Word was published by Summer in 1969 and it became a best seller. Summer, however, began to harbor much guilt about stealing his friend's work.
