Angel Opening a Door, also called Angel Painting is an important painting in Hotel Dusk: Room 215. Made by the famous painter Marcel Osterzone, it's considered to be his masterpiece and rumored to be his final work. A key reason for its fame is that Osterzone was a landscape painter, and thus he did not paint human forms prior to its creation.

Description[]

An oil painting made with old paints and canvas, Angel Opening a Door holds a mysterious aura. Despite the title, no door is visible, leaving it up to interpretation the position as well as the shape of the door.

The background consists of a blue sky with clouds notably made with smudged strokes that are similar to watercolor, contrasting the appearance of the angel with shades of pink to white.

On the foreground, the enigmatic angel's body is facing the observer with its wings spread out across the painting, wearing a frilly white dress shaded in blue which is similar in color tones to the wings. Its length covers the arms to the elbows as well as the legs. The neck is adorned with a blue choker holding a metallic grey pendant.

The angel is surrounded by puffy clouds that differ from the background with shades of blue to white, covering the lower part of the dress and completing the heavenly setting.

Depicted as a girl of young age, the angel's strands of brown hair flow in the air in both directions, with golden highlights made from the light source. Her face bears an enigmatic visage, as her eyes are closed yet the mouth bears a smile as she faces the observer, the shading under the lower eyelid and the thickness of the eyelashes creating the illusion that she's slightly looking down towards her hands. Her open palms are held together as they are horizontally stretched towards the observer with a slight angle, showing that they hold a medium-sized key in the colors of brass, with a three-holed bow and a double bit. The key is the only hint leading towards the missing door.

History[]

Before Hotel Dusk: Room 215[]

Angel Opening a Door is one of the many paintings Dunning Smith created under the name of the fictional painter Osterzone. Earning the status of Osterzone's masterpiece, it eventually ended up in Nile's warehouse.

On December 24th 1976, Danny attempted to take the painting from the warehouse in order to sell it and flee from Nile along with Louis DenNonno, but Brian Bradley killed the former and took the painting along with Nile's cash, then fled.

In June of 1979, Bradley went to Hotel Dusk, where he confessed his actions to Dunning and replaced the painting on the wall inside Room 217 with the angel painting, as a gesture of returning the work to the author. Dunning took it and hid it inside the basement's secret room, where he covered it with a thick layer of paint.

Speculation/analysis[]

It is theorized by players that the angel in the painting is intended to be Jenny Smith, or at least, how Dunning imagines an older Jenny to look like. This is backed up by Jenny and the angel both being brunette. This theory fits within the context of the story and adds to how Dunning deeply misses his daughter. Plus, Jenny being represented as an angel could possibly also mean that Dunning thinks she is a gift from God or figuratively appearing and acts like an angel in her father's point of view. A darker interpretation is that Dunning may have lost faith in ever seeing Jenny again, and that he wishes that he will see her again in Heaven. This is not the first time a theme like this has been suggested in a Cing game, as Richard Robbins also sketched his missing daughter, Ashley Mizuki Robbins, imagining what she would look like when she was older.

Another theory is that the angel depicted is a fusion between Jenny and Mila Evans, as the angel has a choker similar to Mila's and a hair color similar to Jenny's. In addition, Mila has an enigmatic behavior and unknown role in most of Hotel Dusk: Room 215's story as well as an "angelic" appearance and clothing.

Trivia[]

  • The key depicted in the painting is highly similar to the one that Dunning gives to Kyle Hyde, which is necessary to open the small red box, a key item in the game.
