"I don't wanna be in this messed-up place. I wanna go home. I wanna find Jessica and just... go home."
Ashley Mizuki Robbins, surname alternatively Robins and called Ash by her friends, is the protagonist of the Another Code series, including Another Code: Two Memories (also known as Trace Memory), Another Code: R - A Journey into Lost Memories, and the remakes of both games Another Code: Recollection.
Ashley is introduced as a lonely girl with no "true" friends at the start of the series. Two days before her 14th birthday in 2005, she receives a letter from her father who she was told died a decade ago, and decides to visit Blood Edward Island to find him. The series focuses on Ashley's emotional journey as she tries to shed light on mysteries surrounding not only her past, but others as well. During her journey, she partners up with two boys, Daniel Edward and Matthew Crusoe, the former a ghost and the latter among the living, to help them uncover the truth.
Background[]
Ashley was born in 1991 on a date decided by when the player's birthdate is, although it is canonically February 25th otherwise. She is the only child of two brilliant M.J. Labs scientists, Richard and Sayoko Robbins. Her parents worked on a project researching memories, with a main technological device known as Another. Her paternal grandparents were already deceased, having been killed in a plane crash on a visit to South America. Her maternal grandparents reside at a quiet village in Japan due to her mother being an immigrant.
On Ashley's third birthday, her and Sayoko had just returned to the suburbs of Seattle after they left Lake Juliet. Later on, one of their co-workers named Bill Edward vengefully murdered Sayoko who previously stopped her work at the Another project and the memory research in favor of her family. Sayoko hid Ashley in a closet and told her not to make a sound and be quiet as a mouse. Ashley then peeked outside the closet to witness her mother being shot in the chest with a handgun by Bill.
Sometime later, Richard found a dying Sayoko. After she passed, Richard found Ashley and brought her out of the closet. From that day onwards, this memory became imprinted in Ashley's subconscious and would manifest in her dreams constantly, leaving a mental scar.
Afterwards, Richard gave his daughter to his sister, Jessica Robbins who raised Ashley and kept her out of her family to the degree she did not even know what her father looked like. He promised Jessica he would return for Ashley someday. He wanted to continue to work on Another in order to read Ashley's memories, so that he could discover who murdered Sayoko. Ashley is also said to have been a crybaby as an infant.
As she grew up, Ashley often wondered what her parents were like. Under Richard's suggestion, Jessica lied to Ashley her whole life, leading her to believe that her parents died in a car accident when she was three.
By 2005, Ashley lives in an apartment with her aunt.
Appearances[]
Another Code: Two Memories[]
In Another Code: Two Memories, two days before her 14th birthday, in 2005, Ashley receives a letter from her father, who she believed was dead, accompanied with a device called Dual Another System (DAS). He invites her to the Blood Edward Island, where the two can finally be reunited. She is taken there by her aunt Jessica and a captain. Ashley goes to the island, but with her father nowhere to be found.
Soon after, Jessica leaves her with the captain and goes to look for Richard. Ashley decides to find her aunt as well upon realizing she been gone for a long time and says goodbye to the captain. When she hears Jessica's scream from far away, she eagerly wanders around trying to find her father and aunt. While exploring the island's graveyard, she meets a ghost named Daniel Edward, or "D" for short. He reveals his spirit has been trapped on the island for 57 years. Together they try to solve the mysteries behind his past and Ashley's parents.
Eventually, Ashley discovers a man claiming to be her father, and she is taken aback by his stench of smoke. The man leaves her alone for a while, and eventually she discovers Jessica tied up in a kitchen storage room. Her aunt, who claims she was attacked or drugged by "Bill", is too woozy to follow so Ashley and D keep exploring. They discover an unconscious man in a room, and upon waking up, he too claims to be her father. Ashley assumes the man is Bill and questions him, though in the heat of the interrogation, he runs away. Ashley and D keep exploring the mansion.
In the mansion's laboratory, Ashley finally comes to realize that the man she met recently is her father Richard, while the previous man was Bill pretending to be him. Ashley and Richard confront Bill in a cavern, and Ashley finally understands that Bill was her mother's murderer. D appears to Bill and scares him, causing him to fall to his death.
On the shore, Ashley, Richard, Jessica and the captain all meet up. Depending on whether or not the player was able to recover D's memories, he either gives her a sad farewell or a happy one. Ashley remarks how she will never forget her 14th birthday.
After Blood Edward Island[]
Ashley and Richard lived together in Washington, although they did not get along, and they would sometimes argue with each other. Ashley aspired to become a musician, so she saved up while working at a CD store and bought an electro-acoustic guitar, as well as heart earrings. She planned to enter a competition with a boy who played the piano. She also lives in Liberty Town and attends Liberty Town High School with Janet Rice.
Six months prior to Another Code: R, Richard left to go to work at Lake Juliet. Although he told Ashley he'd come home on weekends, he ends up breaking his promise, causing resentment from Ashley.
Another Code: R - A Journey into Lost Memories[]
In the sequel, Another Code: R - A Journey into Lost Memories, two years after the events of Two Memories a now 16-year-old Ashley visits Lake Juliet to camp with her father, after being invited by him. As she exits the bus, a shadowy figure of a woman shoves her off and steals her bag. While trying to chase the woman, Ashley loses sight of her. At the campgrounds, Ashley signs in at the guesthouse and reports her stolen bag to Tommy Harrison and Dan Maxwell.
While exploring Lake Juliet, Ashley soon finds out that she once visited the place with her mother. Ashley gets to meet with Matthew Crusoe, a young boy looking for his father, whom she promises to help. The two are set to answer questions about Ashley's late mother and the disappearance of Matt's father. Ashley tries to keep Matt away from Dan and anyone who can jeopardize his quest to locate his father. Ashley also helps create medicine with a recipe given by Charlotte Graham to help Matt when he gets sick.
Eventually, Ashley finds her way to JC Valley, but has to split from Matt when Sofia Callaghan claims he is not allowed to enter. Ashley works with Mike Tyler, Gina Barnes and Rex Alfred, when she begins to discover the true culprit behind the strange events going on at the lab. Ashley is also horrified when Richard has his memories wiped to forget about her, but later she is able to use Another 0 to repair his memories. After a final confrontation with the culprit on a nearby island, Ashley has to return to Liberty Town. Ashley says goodbye to Dan, Elizabeth and Matt.
Another Code: Recollection[]
In the remake of both games, Ashley plays a very similar role to the original games. In the first game, she already considers D a friend before they enter the Edward Mansion.
In the second game, Ryan attempts to revive Sayoko within Ashley's body by using the ANOTHER prototype to rewrite Ashley's memories with Sayoko's. While Ashley is unconscious and connected to the ANOTHER, she encounters a memory backup of her mother's consciousness. Sayoko tells Ashley that her RAS will protect her from Ryan's experiment.
Physical appearance[]
Ashley has a slender build, and is ethnically half-Japanese and half-Caucasian. She has white hair and dark eyes (portrayed as brown with a hint of blue on the original Another Code: R in-game model). She bears a remarkable resemblance to her mother Sayoko, with Jessica and Richard saying that she has her mother's eyes in Two Memories. Although her hair color is unusual, it seems to be natural considering that it hasn't changed since she was three (as shown in flashbacks and memories). Ryan also comments that Ashley looks like Sayoko, just with a different hair color, even further suggesting that it is natural.
Another Code: Two Memories[]
She wears a cropped short sleeved red-orange and white raglan t-shirt (which resembles a baseball associated shirt) with graphic detailing on the front and her midriff partially revealed. She also wears dark gray jeans tied in a white belt with a matching strap, and black sweatbands on each wrist. Lastly, she wears grayish-black sneakers with white on the top front, that have matching shoelaces and soles as well.
Another Code: R[]
She wears a red-orange tank top with a white hibiscus flower motif on its left, a necklace, dark blue jeans tied in a white belt with a light yellowish strap and a gray buckle. She also has a white pouch on the backside of her pants, light coral colored sneakers, pink earrings and the black sweatbands.
Another Code: Recollection[]
In Two Memories, she wears a red and white North Wells University hoodie with a white top underneath it, a pink watch on her left wrist, red sneakers with white soles and laces, a pair of dark gray jeans tied in a white belt, a white pouch and a black sweatband on her right wrist.
In A Journey into Lost Memories, she wears a red flannel shirt with a top underneath that has the words "Rock N Roll" on the front, denim shorts, white socks with a gray stripe, the RAS on her right wrist, two black chokers, red earrings, a necklace and ankle-length red boots with plaid on the left, right and backsides. Her boots also have white soles and laces. Additionally, the redone model for Ashley has some differences such as having pinkish lines on her cheeks.
Personality[]
At the beginning of the first game, Ashley is shown to be quiet, curious, sensitive and sincere. After being raised by her aunt with no sight of her parents, she always felt the need to know what really happened to them. Once Jessica revealed that her father was alive, she felt a little betrayed. When she comes to the island, she is shown to be impatient and later on gets frustrated after not seeing her father come, to the point of regretting going to the island after losing Jessica. During a talk with Cliff Fox, he tells her that it's not good for a kid to wonder why people die, implying that her curiosity, while justified, can be overwhelming. Ashley tends to doubt and feel let down very easily when things don't go the way she expected. Despite that, her strong will (and D's support) makes her never give up in finding the truth.
Ashley is recognized for having a "pure heart" by D, declaring that most adults can't see him (with Cliff being an exception) because their hearts and minds are clouded and are unable to see things for how they really are. On the contrary, Ashley's emotional, trustful, and empathetic personality made her perceive D's presence, which possibly means that she's overall good-hearted. Ashley also has a good friendship with D, getting along with him and working alongside him with ease, despite both being strangers. While she's trustful, she also is very inquisitive of people she doesn't trust. She was able to understand something was off with Bill's attitude when he pretended to be her father. She is not afraid or ashamed of showing how she feels, being prone to tear up or to express anger and confusion. She also upholds a strong sense of justice and good will; she defended Richard when Bill attempted to kill him even if she truly didn't know him.
Ashley is empathetic with others simply because she believes in people, and for the most part trusts what they say. For example, when Matt claimed his uncle didn't like him or truly cared about him, Ashley did not retort or undermine him. Instead, she simply took Matt's word, and didn't doubt him.
Ashley is upfront with those she doesn't like. When she first met Elizabeth Alfred she couldn't stand her "childishly bratty" attitude, and hated the idea of being friends with someone like her. Even so, she still attempted to help Elizabeth with her family problems, and the two ultimately got onto friendly terms. Ashley can also be quite confrontational; when Charlotte kept saying that finding Matt's father was impossible, Ashley proceeded to backtalk her, which astonished her, even admiring Ashley's guts.
- "It's not pity! He's really putting his all into finding his dad. And that's why I'm helping him... It's not impossible... I'm sure Matt can find his dad! Why do you think it's impossible? It's not impossible! ...No, it's not! It is not impossible! I... know exactly how he feels."
- — Ashley to Charlotte Graham about Matthew Crusoe
Ashley does have some flaws, however. Her trusting nature can sometimes be an issue, especially when she doesn't trust her gut instincts in regards to authorative figures and adults. These adults end up taking advantage of her naivety and attempt to manipulate her, such as when Sofia Callaghan mentioned there were no issues with the security system, leading to Ashley trusting her orders in spite of the red flags. Ashley can also be extremely stubborn, and while her stubbornness can be good at times, it can also cloud her judgement, especially when combined with her trusting nature. For example, when Bill told her he was her father; she trusted him so much that she refused to believe Richard even when he told her the truth. She can also be interpreted as a bit clumsy, such as when Elizabeth's music box slipped out of her hand.
Throughout the games, Ashley learns a valuable life lesson in a somewhat brutal fashion: if something can go horribly wrong, there is a strong possibility it will, what the idiom "better safe than sorry" means, and not to dismiss her inner feelings and hunches about other people. A lot of children, both today and in the past, are taught and believe they can always trust adults, but the Another Code series shows why is this an extremely flawed and dangerous outlook, and depicts the dark reality that there are flawed and irresponsible adults who are neglectful, and are willing to manipulate, abuse and even hurt the vulnerable. Ashley becomes wiser and begins to exhibit better judgement, and not to dismiss red flags. She learns of horrible, tragic incidents that could have been easily prevented if adults were more cautious, such as when Kelly Crusoe drowned because her and Matt were left unattended, and the adults had too much faith in leaving them around dangerous areas. Ashley becomes more proactive and she carries this life lesson and experiences with Bill into the sequel, where she aids Matt.
A second harsh life lesson Ashley learns is that lying can be justified sometimes, and it can be okay for children to sometimes lie to adults and authoritative figures. There are many people, especially older people, who believe children should never lie to adults under any circumstance, or that lying is evil or sinful. However, Ashley lied to Dan about Matt's location because she knew the adult figures at Lake Juliet could not be relied on, enabling Matt to explore and find enough evidence around Lake Juliet to locate his lost father. While Dan is not shown to be an evil authoritative figure, there's no proof that he would have agreed to the conditions Ashley set for Matt's investigation.
By the age of 16, she has developed a strong passion for music and for playing the guitar. She also is fond of chocolate, like Richard. Ashley is portrayed with a liking for cute outfits and perhaps trendy fashion; she accessorizes with earrings and necklaces and wristbands. In both games, she wears clothes that were popular for girls in the 2000's and early 2010's. Showing one's mid-riff was also popular in that time period. This pattern is still present in her concept art and other external sources such as Taisuke Kanasaki's artwork of adult Ashley, where she wears trendy clothes. In the "Ashley's Diary" section on the official Japanese site, Ashley also relates that she wanted pink heart earrings as a birthday gift, and that "she fell in love with them at first sight".[1]
Ashley has a complex relationship with her father, and as a result has complex feelings towards him, particularly in Another Code: R. Although she loves him very much, she cannot stand his treatment of her, which she considers selfish. One of her major flaws is her inability to control her outbursts around him. Particularly after meeting him for the first time in six months, the only thing she could think of was to shout at him. Despite her outbursts, she seemed to be aware of her need to "try harder" to control these urges. When it came to her father, she could also be closed-minded, and often failed to see things from his point of view; she was often shocked whenever she found out deeper aspects of her father's personality or his life beyond the "workaholic dad" image that she had of him, such as their shared love for music.
When Two Memories was translated from Japanese to English in the European version, Ashley became less "accepting" of strange events such as meeting a ghost. When the game was localized into Trace Memory from the European version, Ashley became more talkative, outspoken and sassy. Ashley in Trace Memory says things like how Jessica lying about her father being deceased "really messed" her up. She is also more backtalking and her relationship with Jessica is more strained; she calls Jessica "such a know-it-all". However, she can be seen being concerned for her aunt, like when she heard her shout on the other side of the bridge or when she later found her glasses on the ground. More evidence of this is when she spots Jessica in the storage room and asks her if she was hurt or feeling okay. Ashley wanted to know who did this to her and confront Richard, assuming that he hurt her (while believing he was Bill). She can also be perceived to be more impolite in Trace Memory as she no longer thanks the captain when he gives her candy.
Ashley is portrayed as an isolated character before the first game with no major friends, only classmates. It is said that D was her first "real" friend. As such, she has a close relationship with D in every version of the game. She cares about him, listens to him and attempts to help D get his memories back. There are some examples of this, such as when D hesitated to head inside the Edwards' Mansion and Ashley asked him if something was wrong, as she invited him to come in. D also mentions Ashley doesn't like being alone. Ashley struggling with her loneliness was intended to be a major theme in the Japanese and European versions of the game. For example, in the ending of Another Code, D talks about how Ashley doesn't have to be alone anymore now that she has found her father and aunt. In Another Code, Ashley is also silent when D claims she doesn't like being alone. In Trace Memory, Ashley was changed to be more independent, so when D claims Ashley doesn't like being alone in this version, she is taken aback a bit, saying she really does not mind it and acts like he is just assuming things about her. In Another Code: R, Ashley tells Matthew that she has never told any of her friends about her mother's murder until that moment, showing how Ashley has difficulty finding people to confide in.
There's some evidence suggesting that Ashley may have more a spiritual connection with animals than people. In the first game, she is associated with a teddy bear on her birthday, and her diary mentions she routinely checks on the birds in the nearby park to feed them. In Another Code: R, she has a Pinkie Rabbit bag and she mentions she likes dogs and wanted one when she was younger, but couldn't due to living in an apartment. On her walk home from school, she would frequently pass by her neighbor's house with a big dog in its yard and play with it.
In Another Code: R, certain aspects of Ashley's personality and character can depend upon player choice, during response prompts. For example, whether she is willing to lie about her age, and how willing she is to instantly trust certain characters. Ultimately though, Ashley's general personality traits remains the same.
Quotes[]
Another Code: Two Memories
- "I've had a lot of experience not getting myself killed, you know!" (Ashley to Jessica)
- "When people grow up, do they all forget about the past? ...What if you want to remember?" (to the Captain)
- "I have the worst luck. I can't believe it. I haven't found Dad or Jessica. And now this! Waking the dead. What else could happen today. I don't know what to do."
- "And... according to the article, the person who killed my mother might have been my father. I didn't come all the way here... to find that out! I've had enough. No, really. Enough! I want to go home."
- "It's just so sad. I don't know if I can take the sadness."
- "Oh, man. You're something else. YES, SHE DISAPPEARED!"
- "This is really messed up. You're a horrible person, Bill... Yes, you are! You lied to me! You did horrible things to the people closest to you!"
- "I don't care what Bill did. No one deserves to die like that. Violently. I didn't want anyone to die."
- "D has left. He's moved on past this world. I'll never forget you, D. You were the only one who knew my true feelings. You have your peace now. Goodbye."
- "I'm happy I found Dad. I'm happy I found the truth. I'll never forget today. When I grow up, even if horrible things happen, I'll always remember today. The last day I was 13."
Another Code: R - A Journey into Lost Memories
- "He'll come to pick me up? Sorry, Jessica, but you just don't get it. Like he'd remember to come and get me. I'm sure he thinks I'll be totally fine on my own, like always."
- "That's it! Forget this stupid camp! I'm going home right now! Except, I can't."
- "I'm serious! Matthew, do you believe me? This time I'm the one asking. Do you believe me? Thanks. That means a lot."
- "Matt... I just remembered something. About the first best friend I ever had. You remind me of him in a way. Yeah. His name was D. He lived on this deserted island called Blood Edward Island. He was... a ghost. D was a ghost who'd forgotten everything about his own life. He didn't know his own name, how he died... And he was all alone, just like me. When he was with me, he discovered who he was and why he died. Then he was able to move on and finally rest. So I can never see him again."
- "So, Matt... Don't cry any more. If you cry... Kelly will worry about you, and she won't be able to move on."
- "I WON'T CRY! I won't cry in front of someone like you! You don't know how to cry, or even what to feel! I am not going to cry in front of someone who can't even understand basic emotions! I'm done. I don't need you."
- "No! I don't understand you at all! And I don't want to! Why? Why did you have to kill Mom... just for your revenge? Why did you have to make Bill kill her?! If you hated Judd, why not just take revenge there and then? Why did you take away Mom? Why were you so cruel... that you had to kill Mom? When I met Bill on Blood Edward Island two years ago... I remembered looking through the closet where Mom had hid me... I remember Bill's face as he shot Mom... For me, then, remembering that time was... Remembering things I'd forgotten was... It was horrible. But I didn't know how horrible it really was."
Trivia[]
- Although not confirmed as an inspiration, Ashley's outfit in Journey into Lost Memories 's remake is very similar to Rachel Amber from Life is Strange, probably as an homage.
- Ashley tells Ryan while eating with him that she hates peppers, suggesting she cannot stand spicy food, and it is only now that she's older that she can tolerate them.
- Ashley follows a common theme, it being children not being like their parents and choosing not to follow in their footsteps. This has often caused resentment from both sides, sometimes resulting in the child burning bridges with their parent figure because they dislike the expectations and life choices forced on them. In Ashley's case, she intends to be a musician, unlike her scientist parents. Other examples include:
- Richard's father being a medical doctor, while Richard became a scientist and Jessica a chemistry teacher, with neither of them taking over Robbins Memorial Hospital.
- Sayoko not wishing to take over her father-like figure Judd Fitzgerald's work and refusing to become his successor, instead wishing to focus on being a mother. This resulted in Judd's paternal-like love for Sayoko sour into hatred.
- Lawrence Edward wanting a successor to his mining company, which Leonard Edward hated the idea of, while Thomas Edward also did not want to do. Lawrence also didn't approve of Leonard's marriage with a woman named Sally, so he disowned his son and they never spoke to each other again.
- D wanted to become a movie director while Thomas was a writer.
- Elizabeth Alfred not wanting to take over JC Valley like her father Rex Alfred, beginning to despise scientists due to her belief that they value their research above all else.
- Olivia Graham eloped with Gilbert Moss because her mother Charlotte Graham did not approve of their marriage, resulting in them not speaking for five years.
- On the official site for Another Code: Two Memories (in Japanese), there is a section that represents Ashley's Diary, where she relates events of her life before the main story.[2]
- On the official site for Trace Memory,[3] the website was created to be an interactive version of Ashley's bedroom. Viewers could click and examine objects, learning more about the game's plot. One of the objects was a diary talking about Jessica insisting on having a traditional birthday party for Ashley, with Ashley saying that what she wants most is to be left alone. The site is defunct.
- Ashley's room in Another Code: R has some objects seen off-screen and they can be observed using Free Look in Dolphin emulator.
- Ashley's birth date in Another Code: Two Memories/Trace Memory was the same as the user's birth date that was registered on the DS system. In the sequel, because the Wii doesn't record user birth dates (and probably to have an official date), Ashley's birth date was set to February 25.
- This date was most likely chosen because of Another Code's Japanese release date being February 24, and the game itself taking place the day before Ashley's 14th birthday.
- This birth date is also shown in Another Code: Recollection, further proving its canonicity.
- Ashley's memory of her mother's killer seemed to be foggy, considering that she didn't realize Bill was the direct perpetrator upon seeing his face years later. It's likely because of traumatic amnesia after witnessing the murder, which is why this part of her memory was blocked out.
- Ashley's memory of Richard was blurry as well, since she didn't truly recognize her father's face when she saw him again in the DS version (presumably because of traumatic amnesia), so it can be speculated that she did not see any pictures of him before arriving at Blood Edward Island and she thought he was there after the Captain described his appearance. Although, it can be argued that he was referring to Bill instead. Ashley even felt confused after she angrily talked to Richard, in a room that was previously used by Lawrence Edward.
- In Another Code: Recollection, Ashley's eyes are blue tinted, although they are shown to be black in her character model. This is notably seen during the game's opening cutscene. The reason why her eyes appear like this is presumably because of the game's lighting.
- Ashley appears as a trophy in Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which is unlocked after playing 100 hours of the game. She also appears as two stickers, being "Ashley" and "Ashley Viewing DAS" The description for Ashley's trophy is shown below:
(US version): "A black-eyed, unique 13-year-old girl raised by her aunt, Jessica, after her parents disappeared in an accident when she was three. Her father and mother researched biology and memory, respectively. One day, Ashley receives a package from the father she had assumed was long dead. Hoping to meet him, she travels out to Blood Edward Island with Jessica."
(European version): "A black-eyed, unique 13-year-old girl raised by her aunt, Jessica, after her parents disappeared in an accident when she was three. Her father and mother researched biometrics and memory, respectively. One day, Ashley receives a package from the father she had assumed was long dead. Hoping to meet him, she travels out to Blood Edward Island with Jessica."
- In Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Ashley's US trophy states that her father researched in biology. This is incorrect as Ashley's father researched in biometrics. This error was not present in the Japanese version and was fixed in the European version.
- Ashley appears as a spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and has a spirit battle in the World of Light mode. Her spirit uses art from Another Code: R - A Journey into Lost Memories. She is a support spirit. The battle has the player facing against Isabelle with a clear Villager. The stage is Luigi's Mansion. Villager is a stand-in for D and the stage itself represents Edward Mansion.
- Ashley and Kyle Hyde (the protagonist of Hotel Dusk and Last Window) are both represented in the Super Smash Bros. series in a similar fashion.
- Both appear as unlockable trophies and stickers in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Both Ashley and Kyle's trophies have unique conditions that must be met, meaning both can only be obtained once. Additionally, both have a handful of stickers from their series, with Ashley having two stickers and Kyle having one. The stickers for Another Code are "Ashley", "Ashley Viewing DTS", "Captain", and "Jessica". The stickers for Hotel Dusk are "Kyle Hyde", "Mila", and "Dunning Smith".
- Both appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as advanced (two star) spirits, though Ashley is a support spirit while Kyle is a primary spirit. Both also appear as Light Realm spirit battles in the World of Light mode.
