"You're finally here. The first person who can see me. That's why I know you're the one... the one who can help me regain my memories."
Daniel Edward, nicknamed D (ディー), is the deuteragonist of Another Code: Two Memories and appears in its remake Another Code: Recollection.
He was the nephew of Henry Edward, the son of Thomas Edward and Jane (née White), the grandson of Leonard Edward and Sally, and the great-grandson of Lawrence Edward and Helen. Daniel died as a young boy in 1948, during a series of tragic events in the Edward family. Without any memories, he wanders Blood Edward Island as a ghost for 57 years with adults being unable to see him due to the lack of purity in their hearts.
When he finally meets Ashley Mizuki Robbins in 2005, a teenage girl who is able to see him due to being pure of heart and being able to believe in people, he becomes her friend and she promises to help him remember his life, so that he can finally find his peace.
Background[]
Daniel's father Thomas Edward married his childhood sweetheart, Jane White, in 1938 (changed to 1936 in Recollection). On November 28, she gave birth to a son named Daniel. However, after Thomas came back from World War II, Jane died of an illness. Thomas raised his son on his own, who was later diagnosed with a heart condition.
Thomas had problems paying the medical bills and tried to become a successful writer, publishing several short stories and an autobiographical novel based on his experiences in the war, but critics were not too kind to him. He also wrote mystery novels under the name 'David Shields'. Daniel had interest in becoming a movie director. Sometimes Daniel and his father would visit Blood Edward Island and Daniel would play with his cousin Frannie Edward who he was close to.
In 1948, during a visit of Daniel and his father on the island of the Edward family, Thomas attempted to blackmail his brother, Henry Edward. He wanted to force Henry to accept a fake testament that implied that their grandfather, Lawrence Edward passed the entire wealth of the Edward family to Thomas. Thomas didn't want to believe that little was left from the family's wealth, as Henry said to him, and therefore Thomas threatened Henry with a gun. However, Henry managed to snatch away the gun and shot Thomas. Daniel saw this scene through the door and escaped. Henry noticed Daniel and ran after him.
Henry told the boy to stop running due to his heart, but Daniel didn't follow his uncle's words. His escape took him to one of the family's caves. There he took a rest and cried, but when Henry appeared, Daniel thought he would shoot him as well, and so he continued to run until he came to a cliff. He felt a pain in his chest because his heart condition set in, lost his balance and fell off the cliff. Henry tried to rescue him in vain. His uncle's outstretched hand was the last thing Daniel saw at the last moment of his life. He suddenly lost his memories, causing him to stay on the island as a ghost after his death.
Another Code: Two Memories[]
In Another Code: Two Memories, a teenage girl, Ashley Mizuki Robbins visits the island along with her aunt, Jessica Robbins in order to meet her father, Richard Robbins in 2005. Early in the game, she encounters the ghost at the cemetery who introduces himself as D. Ashley is able to see D since she has a pure heart, in combination with her still being able to believe (trust) people. D tells her about his problem and asks her to help him retrieving his memories. He states that he can only remember that someone called him D. Initially being frightened of D, Ashley eventually agrees to help him and both explore the mansion in order to find clues for D's life as well as Jessica and Richard.
After solving various puzzles, reconstructing D's life and overcoming numerous difficulties in the mansion, Ashley finally learns about her actual father who is then discovered to be Richard. A man Ashley and D previously encountered in the mansion and who claimed to be her father was actually Bill Edward, a descendant of the Edward family.
In a cave, Ashley and Richard encounter Bill, who wants to use the results of Richard's and Sayoko's researches for his own deeds. After a longer talk between Ashley, Richard and Bill, D interrupts Bill shortly before he attempts to shoot Richard (and in the DS version, directly references Frannie by inferring she'll cry if he goes through with shooting him). Bill can apparently see D that moment, even though he is an adult, and the shock causes Bill to fall off the cliff which is very likely to be the same spot where D also fell to his death. After pausing for a moment, Richard tells Ashley to leave the cave while he goes back to pick up Jessica. If the player collects enough of D's memories, D will reveal to Ashley that he can now remember what happened to him before he died. It turns out that the cave is the same that D ran through.
Outside, Ashley and D meet the Captain, who can surprisingly see D even though he is an adult and doesn't seem to wonder about the existence of a ghost. Before leaving the island, Ashley has a last talk with D. If the player had not triggered all of D's required memories, he has to stay on the island. Otherwise, D gives Ashley his hand. The moment she touches his hand, the mark on his chest disappears, finally allowing D to find his peace. The two friends say goodbye and D disappears.
Recollection got rid of the 'bad' ending completely, so even if the player hasn‘t triggered all of D‘s memories, he will still remember everything and the outcome is the same, D tells Ashley to touch his hand before he disappears, however the mark on his chest is still visible and he will reunite with his father in the afterlife. It also seems like he is more thankful to Ashley and his words are much kinder than in the DS game.
Another Code: R - A Journey into Lost Memories[]
D is mentioned by Ashley on several occasions. Ashley mentions to her father that Matthew Crusoe, a young boy she befriended at Lake Juliet, reminds her of her "first true friend". When her father asks her about this friend, upset that she never never told him knew about them, Ashley says that there's "a lot he doesn't know about her". She also mentions this "best friend" to Charlotte Graham, as one of the reasons she's so determined to aid Matt.
Later on, after encountering the spirit of Matt's sister, Ashley explicitly talks about Daniel to Matt, saying that she was once friends with a ghost called "D", who was looking for his lost memories. She states that D found his peace after gaining his memories (making the "good ending" of Another Code canonical). Ashley tells Matt that she's sure the same thing has happened to his sister.
Personality[]
Daniel is a polite, well-mannered and quiet child. He is often understanding and cooperative with Ashley, having a good friendship with her as both cooperate very well even if she is a stranger to him for the whole story. D is also closer to Ashley in Another Code and in Recollection, however this is not the case in Trace, as their friendship was significally downplayed at some points and they are sort of distant.
After spending 57 years on the island as a ghost with no memory of his life, Daniel is seen with a need to know the real truth of how he died knowing that is the reason why he couldn't move on from the island. Once D regains his memories thanks to Ashley, he peacefully accepts his fate as he smiles to Ashley while ascending to the sky.
In the 'bad' ending of Another Code, D suddenly abruptly disappears, hinting at the fact that he comes off as a bit colder. In Trace, D gets to talk more to Ashley before he goes; D assures Ashley that he will be all right. Ashley says she is sorry, and D mentions he's already spent 57 years on the island and that a little more time won't hurt. He also states that he will try to remember the rest of his memories all by himself.
D believes in people with a "pure heart" like Ashley, being the ones who are able to see him. Meanwhile people who lack said mentality are unable to perceive him as they possess a cynic and untruthful view of life, specifically adults (most of the time). D is shown to be empathetic towards people, as he was able to understand how much Franny hated to feel alone like Ashley now does. He also understood Ashley's struggles about his father's supposed real identity. When Ashley figures out that Richard is her true father, finds him at the laboratory in the Edwards' Mansion and gave him a hug, D is seen genuinely smiling and happy for them.
During moments in the mansion, D is shown to be wise, thoughtful and slightly melancholic. He believes that the real sadness comes from not knowing the real truth and that people with clouded minds cannot see things for how they really are. This parallels his own life on the island with no clue of his past and Ashley's doubts of willing to know the truth of her father.
When he was alive, Daniel was a happy and shy child. He dreamed of becoming a movie director in the future as he has some knowledge about the zoetrope for example and he also has a fondness for baseball, as mentioned in a conversation between him and Ashley that he and his father used to play a lot of catch together. He also valued his family, including his cousin Franny.
Physical Appearance[]
Daniel was a small child with short neck length hair. He had a small fringe on the front, directed to the left. As a ghost, D has a white and light blue-ish humanoid transparent body with enlarged arms, the mark of a stylized outstretched hand on his chest and a human face. Below his torso, his body is faded. In his 3D model, his torso makes a spiral form at the end.
However, the redone model for D in Another Code: Recollection is shown to have differences such as having a ghost tail pointing downward and it has wavy movement. Waterdrops are also dripping down at the end of his tail as well, indicating on how he died. Additionally, his mark is still visible after he bids farewell to Ashley as well.
In life, Daniel had light skin, light brown hair and dark blue eyes. He wore an old suit with suspenders and a bow at the neck, dark brown shorts and brown shoes with gray socks.
In the original game, his flashbacks are in sepia tone or monochrome, so it is impossible to know what hair color, eye color he has or what the colors on his clothes truly are (when he was alive).
Quotes[]
- "People with clouded minds can only see what's in front of them. Your heart and mind are pure. You see past what's right there. That's why you can see me."
- "I need to know why I died... I need to move on from here."
- "Real sadness comes from not knowing the truth. I should know. Let's go. Your father's waiting."
- "He couldn't see me. Because your father... doesn't trust people. You don't have to worry. Adults are all like that."
- "Stop...! You're making Franny cry."
- "Even though facing the truth can be hard, in the end, it‘s always for the best."
Trivia[]
- In Recollection, D has his own theme music.
- The mark on D's chest is the image of his uncle‘s outstretched hand trying to save him and also the very last thing he saw before he fell to his tragic death. He also states that it was burnt into his mind at the moment of his death, that‘s why it is one of the two things he still can remember; the other thing being the fact that Frannie called him D.
- D is characterized slightly differently depending if the player is playing Another Code or Trace Memory.
- He seems a bit more innocent and naive in Another Code, such as wondering if Ashley has a butler and agreeing Jessica can see him, although one exception is where he thinks blood could be juice at first in Trace.
- In Trace, D comes off as a bit wiser. For example, he has a conversation with Ashley where he says, "Life is always messy, Ashley." and says the living leave traces of themselves wherever they go, and once people die, it's the traces that tell the story. He is able to specify the zoetrope was made in 1834 instead of the 1830s. He also stands up against Ashley more, such as telling her not to get mad at him, and when she is having second thoughts, he gives up on her finding the truth and tells her to go home because ignorance is bliss. He views himself as being hard on Ashley because he feels she needs it.
- Despite being a ghost, D is seemingly able to only float and disappear. He isn't shown to have other abilities such as phasing through humans or walls and possess objects/people in the original DS game. However in Another Code: Recollection, it was revealed that objects go through him and he can't even phase through walls but he is able to fly around and can phase through a bookcase (and walls) when he's a ball of light. He also could summon himself in the Silver Bird room (in Recollection), however this didn‘t happen with any of the other rooms. In the very first conversation between him and Ashley in Another Code, it seems like he can also read Ashley‘s mind. However, this is never mentioned again.
- Even though he is not a human anymore, D can feel certain feelings as a ghost such as that he is happy because Ashley can see him, nervous right before he enters the mansion or scared because of a certain room which is later confirmed to be the Silver Bird room, the same room his father died in.
- In the DS game, it is specified that his parents got married in 1938, but in Recollection, it was changed to 1936. This might have been changed due to the fact that D was not born out of wedlock.
