- "Frannie, your mother believes that I killed Thomas, so that I would be the sole heir to my grandfather's assets. But it's not true. It's absolutely not true."
- — Henry to Frannie in an apparently unsent letter
Henry Edward is the son of Leonard Edward, grandson of Lawrence, older brother of Thomas, husband of Marie (known as Mary only in Trace Memory version), and father of Frannie. He was also the uncle of Daniel.
He is mentioned in Another Code: Two Memories and its remake.
Background[]
Henry was born to Leonard Edward and a woman named Sally in 1910. Two years after his birth, he was given a younger brother named Thomas.
He is said to have been protective of Thomas as a child, and being stern and strong. He wanted to be a painter. The siblings went to university, specified to be Ivy University in Trace Memory.
He married Marie in 1936, and they likely had a daughter named Frannie soon after.
In 1943, the brothers fought in World War II and both returned in September 1945, albeit with physical and mental wounds; Henry lost his right arm. Lawrence invited Henry and his family to move into the mansion after the war. While Henry decided to live on the island with his family as he needed assistance due to missing an arm, struggling with basic matters such as eating, Thomas decided to return to the mainland.
Henry locked himself in the art room a lot, and he would spend time staring at his old paintings, likely feeling a sense of meaningless in his art compared to the violence he was in the war. Despite this, he still painted for a while and was even able to transfer his talent into his left hand, but gradually lost interest.
Henry had violent drunken outbursts, likely due to being upset about losing his arm in World War II, and about the violence and suffering he saw which made him turn to alcohol and resent humanity. His wife began fearing for her and their daughter's safety. After a terrifying incident where Henry began waving a knife around his family, Marie decided to take Frannie away from the island, fearing for her and her daughter's safety, leaving him a letter about her choice.
In 1946, when Lawrence began to make his will, Thomas noticed Henry acting quiet and strange to him.
In 1948, according to Henry, on the night of Thomas' murder, Thomas brought Henry to the Silver Bird room and said, "You must be happy now. Grandfather invited you and your family to live here after the war. He spent much money and effort getting you back on your feet. And you lived up to his hopes. You even became left-handed so you could paint again. Your new work is the best of your life. So... you must be satisfied. You're back on your feet. It's my turn now." Thomas pulled out an envelope from his pocket and said, "Henry, this is Grandfather's will. It says who will inherit his estate. There's only one name. Tomorrow, you will open this envelope in front of everyone. I'm sure you don't want to have an ugly quarrel over an inheritance. You're a very kind person, and I know you have much love for me." Henry informed Thomas that their grandfather had nothing to pass on, causing Thomas to become wildly upset, refusing to believe his brother. Thomas then pointed a gun at Henry, although Henry apparently either had a gun himself, or was able to convince Thomas not to shoot but then ripped the gun out of Thomas' hand. Henry, panicked at his own brother considering killing him, and likely knowing he only had one arm to fight back with, then apparently shot Thomas in fear and self-defense.
Daniel witnessed his father's murder. Panicked, Daniel fled to the cavern with Henry in pursuit, but Daniel's heart condition set in and he accidentally fell to his death, resulting in his last memory being his uncle's outstretched hand trying to save him.
Henry lied about Thomas' death to Marie, claiming his brother killed himself with grief. She felt she became a different man, becoming drunk, having violent outbursts, and once swung a knife near her and Frannie. She decided to remove every knife in the house, and believed he killed Thomas in order to become the sole heir of the inheritance. She wrote Henry a goodbye later and left the island with Frannie.
Henry tried to explain his innocence to Frannie in an apparently undelivered letter. Henry later killed himself in suicide. Him and his brother were given gravestones in the island's cemetery.
Henry's letter to Frannie[]
- Dear Frannie,
- I sit here alone, typing a letter you may never read.
- After much deliberation, I have decided to follow Thomas.
- Before that, I wanted to tell you the truth. Only to you, Frannie.
- I wanted you to know what your father was thinking.
- I wanted to tell you this all in person, but it's not possible now.
- Frannie, your mother believes that I killed Thomas,
- so that I would be the sole heir to my grandfather's assets.
- But it's not true. It's absolutely not true.
- As you recall, when Grandfather fell into critical condition,
- Thomas returned to the mansion with his son, Daniel.
- A few days later, Grandfather passed away, and then...
- something terrible happened.
- That night, Thomas brought me to the Silver Bird room and said,
- "You must be happy now. Grandfather invited you and your family to
- live here after the war. He spent much money and effort getting you
- back on your feet. And you lived up to his hopes. You even became
- left-handed so you could paint again. Your new work is the best of
- your life. So... you must be satisfied. You're back on your feet.
- It's my turn now."
- Then, Thomas pulled out an envelope from his pocket.
- He looked right at me and said, "Henry, this is Grandfather's will.
- It says who will inherit his estate. There's only one name. Tomorrow,
- you will open this envelope in front of everyone. I'm sure you don't
- want to have an ugly quarrel over an inheritance. You're a very kind person,
- and I know you have much love for me."
- When I heard that, I finally realized what he really wanted.
- He wanted to inherit everything Grandfather left.
- He wanted it all to himself. Even at that point, Frannie,
- Thomas didn't know anything. Grandfather didn't have anything left
- to pass on to anyone. I told him that.
- But he didn't believe me. He became wildly upset.
- Then, he pointed a gun at me. He found it in the Golden Bird room.
- I couldn't believe my own blood could do something like that.
- And then, Frannie, something unthinkable happened.
- I did something that can never be fixed.
- Daniel happened to see it, and I don't know why things
- fell apart like that. I think about it all the time,
- but I still don't know why. Please forgive me for not being
- able to make you happy.
- Your father, Henry
