"My brother's a good man. Please trust that he had his reasons. He's not the kind of man who'd abandon his child if there was any other option. I remember the warmth in his eyes as he looked at you."
Jessica Robbins is a recurring character who appears in the Another Code series.
She is Richard's younger sister and Ashley's aunt. She is Richard's only other living relative besides Ashley. She teaches chemistry at a high school.
She understands Ashley better than anyone else, although far from perfect; in the Trace Memory version of the game, Ashley has more of a rift in her relationship with Jessica, having more backtalk and calling Jessica "such a know-it-all".
Personality[]
Jessica is generally nice, strict and intelligent. She is also caring towards her family. Jessica even felt remorseful for not telling Ashley the truth about her father being alive. In Trace Memory, she talks about stuff that is nonsensical, for example she states that nobody remembers anything at the age of three, making it seem that she's less knowledgeable than Ashley thinks.
Appearance[]
Jessica has a thin build, red hair, teal eyes and usually wears glasses.
Another Code: Two Memories[]
She is wearing a sleeveless orange top with a white collar, a dark gray skirt and black heels.
Another Code: R[]
She is seen with slightly longer hair. She wears a long sleeved orange and white shirt, a dark colored skirt and brown heels. Additionally, she has a necklace and a gold bracelet.
Another Code: Recollection[]
In Two Memories, she wears an orange open front cardigan, a white top underneath, dark gray jeans tied in a pale yellow belt and black flats with dark tan colored soles. Additionally, she has a gold necklace and bracelet.
Background[]
Jessica and Richard were born and raised by their parents in North America. Their father worked as a busy trade merchant (referred to as an importer in Another Code: Recollection), a line of business that took him all around the world. He was solely focused on his work, making him extremely busy and was rarely at home as a result (which possibly meant that their mother mostly looked after them). He also ran Robbins Memorial Hospital in Santa Monica, California. This hints that Richard and Jessica grew up there and eventually moved up north to Washington at some point. Their parents sadly passed away while on a vacation to South America, specifically when their plane crash landed in the Pacific Ocean, circa 1982 when Jessica was about eleven years old. (this crash is mentioned on a DAS card message in the DS version of Another Code. In the Trace Memory script, it only mentions that they died in a plane crash with no further information).
At a young age, Jessica had met Bill Edward at M.J. Labs. It was hinted that she had romantic feelings for him, although for unclear reasons. It also appears they never became a couple, seemingly because he was in love with Sayoko. On the chance that Bill and Jessica were in a relationship, Bill would have ended it when he fled to Blood Edward Island after his crime. She didn't know that Bill had intended to kill Sayoko and feels guilty about not noticing anything wrong with him. She knew Sayoko pretty well it seems; this can be seen in a group photo at the lab inside the Edward's Mansion. This also implies that she had met her around the time Richard became a scientist at M.J. Labs.
Additionally, she had been residing in Washington, sometime before Sayoko's death.
After the murder, Richard was put in custody for questioning. After being released from custody, Jessica wanted to know if he really killed Sayoko. He then looked at her in the eyes and said "absolutely not".
At one point, he came to Jessica's residence and dropped off Ashley there. He told Jessica to keep his daughter safe. He promised to return to Ashley someday and even ordered her to not tell Ashley that he's alive. From then on, Jessica raised Ashley by herself.
Around 2005, Jessica and Ashley live in a apartment building.
Another Code: Two Memories[]
In 2005, Jessica revealed to Ashley that her father had been alive the whole time, causing Ashley to distrust Jessica. Jessica explained that she couldn't tell her that he was alive because of the promise she made with him and she was also very confused as to why Richard ordered her to keep quiet, thinking he could be in danger somehow, and apologizes.
The two head to Blood Edward Island to reunite with Richard, although she gets abducted by Bill after crossing a bridge. She is knocked unconscious and abducted by him where he locks her in the storage room of a kitchen, and she is fairly certain she was drugged.
A disturbed Ashley finds her, but Jessica is too woozy and sleepy to follow. She implores Ashley to find Richard and warn him after Bill, saying she will catch up.
By the end of the game, Jessica meets up with everyone at the shore. She returns Ashley to Richard. In the Another Code version, Ashley says she is upset by the idea of Jessica being out of her life, while in the Trace Memory version, Ashley says is offended by Jessica's choice of words, feeling as if Jessica views her like an overdue library book.
Another Code: R - A Journey into Lost Memories[]
After the events of the first game, Jessica's and Ashley's relationship drifted apart a bit, with Jessica noticing Ashley was spending more time locked in her room and not talking to her as much as they used to.
In 2007, Jessica encourages a reluctant Ashley to spend time with her father at Lake Juliet. She sees Ashley off before her trip to Luke Juliet. She also appears during a phone call, in which she has second thoughts that perhaps the trip was not a good idea, especially after hearing Richard is still consumed by his work.
Quotes[]
- "There's no use torturing yourself. Just let it go." (to Ashley about her dream)
Trivia[]
- It is suggested in Ashley's Diary that either she or Ashley likes grapefruit juice.
- In the diary, it is said whenever Ashley asked about her parents, Jessica would look sad and refuse to answer.
- In the diary, it is said whenever Ashley cried as a child, Jessica would hug her in silence until she would stop.
- In Ashley's diary on the now-defunct Trace Memory website, Ashley wrote about how Jessica wanted to hold a traditional birthday party with people for Ashley's 14th birthday. However, Ashley felt Jessica just doesn't get that what she wants most is just to be left alone.
- In Another Code: Two Memories, Ashley mentions that she teaches chemistry at a college, but in its Trace Memory version, this was changed to a high school. In Another Code: R, her biography mentions high school. It is unclear why these changes were made and what is canonical, however, it is most likely high school. The original Japanese text in the first game uses 高校 which refers to high school in its latter years (as opposed to junior high school), but not university/college level.
- In Another Code: Recollection, Ashley mentions that she has a high school chem teacher salary, which seemingly confirms it even further.
- In Another Code: R, Ashley talks about how when she was a child, she told Jessica she wanted to touch a rainbow, and so Jessica drove with her in a car for hours, chasing after the rainbow.
- In Another Code: Recollection, Ashley says that she's like a mother to her. However, she doesn't consider her as a mother-figure in the original version of Another Code: R.
