- "And let Providence get away with this like he did 19 years ago? I'd rather die trying, if that's what's it's gonna take."
Jonathan "J" Weaver (born as Jonathan Baker) is the protagonist of Again. He is an FBI special agent in the Special Crimes Squad who works with Kate Hathaway in the Clockford Field Office. In March 2010, he becomes involved with a second round of the Providence serial killer case from 19 years ago.
Personality[]
J has the supernatural ability to peer into the past, although it is never unexplained how he received this ability and he tries to keep it to himself because he knows it sounds bizarre. He has a strong sense of justice and keen instincts. He acts calm and cool as well. He exhibits signs of PTSD, as he has recurring dreams that involve Danny.
J is shown to be a critical thinker, but tends to get lost in thought sometimes. He also tries to stay focused on solving the Providence murder case and quite determined to do so since he decided to solve it by himself when his partner refused to continue with the case. In a conversation, J tells Kate he only watches the news on TV, causing her to be weirded out.
Background[]
J is the oldest son of Nicolas Baker and Amy Baker, and he has a younger brother named Daniel (Danny). Nicolas was a university professor who studied criminal psychology. On March 11, 1991, J's parents were shot to death by a mysterious killer and the family home was set on fire after, when J was 12 years old. J suffered serious head injuries and Danny went missing. J was found unconscious from carbon monoxide poisoning, and he woke up two months later after being hospitalized. He was emotionally scarred by that tragedy.
By the time he was 13 years old, J was adopted by Frederick Weaver, a friend of his father's and a professor of child psychology at Clockford University. He formed a bond with him due to his kindness. Frederick once took J to an old cottage and J pointed at a window and said there's someone standing by the window crying. J then passed out. Frederick later found out someone was brutally killed by a window, and the incident, among others, convinced him that J had different senses and could peer into the past.
J went to Clockford University with Hugo Watt, who was a few years behind him. J describes himself as a bookworm, and Dr. Edward Gordon was a mentor to J in college.
Again[]
After several days of investigation, J learns that he has bizarre acquaintances: his university professor and his FBI boss happen to be serial killers. The former, Edward Gordon, is the 1991 Providence and the latter, Henry Mills, is the 2010 Providence.
In a warehouse, J confronts Edwards and learns the truth. J learns his father knew the identity of Providence and was killed by Edward because he got too close to the truth. J also discovers he, himself, was essentially an experiment by Edward to see how a child would grow and develop after witnessing his parents die. He learns Edward wants to cover up the truth from the past and frame the second round of killings on him, with a false claim that J used Henry Mills as his puppet. After J convinces Edward the evidence is stacked against him, Edward tries to kill himself. Kate ends up non-fatally shooting Edward before he can kill himself and the case is solved. Sometime after, the 1991 Providence murders were officially updated.
Later on, J returns to his childhood home, which strangely hasn't been bulldozed in 19 years. He tries to find a lead on Danny but finds nothing major; only that he remembers Edward taking Danny. After celebrating solving the case with his team, he receives a phone call claiming the Providence case is not entirely over and that more killings will occur.
Trivia[]
- Jonathan was possibly sent to an orphanage after the death of his parents and it was presumably where Frederick adopted him.
