Lawrence Edward is the father of Leonard Edward, the grandfather of Henry and Thomas, and the great-grandfather of Frannie and Daniel.
Background[]
Lawrence was born in 1868. With a woman named Helen, he must have became the father of Leonard quite young around the age of twenty, due to the two factors that Leonard became a father by 1910 and Lawrence lived to 1948.
Lawrence lived a life of hardship and poverty. He found an island which had gold on it and became the founder of the Edward Company. He trusted no one, believing people were after his wealth, and valued money above all else in life. He built the Edward Mansion as a symbol of his success, and refused to let anyone in who was not part of the Edward family. Because of his suspicious nature, he rigged the mansion with traps and secret rooms of all kinds to keep strangers out.
There is strangely a lack of evidence of Helen's life on the island, making Richard Robbins suspect that Lawrence's distrust of people led Helen to fall out of love with him, and she left the island. Still, Lawrence did have a strong friendship with the mansion butler.
Leonard hated Lawrence's plans for him. Leonard refused to take over the family business, and left home. Soon afterward, Leonard married a woman named Sally, a woman he met at a bar. Lawrence didn't approve of the marriage so he disowned his son. Years later, Leonard sent his father a letter of reconciliation, but it was too late and the father and son never met again.
After Leonard died young from an illness, Lawrence took care of his grandsons Henry and Thomas. Lawrence wished for Thomas to be the successor to the Edward Company, but Thomas was reluctant, feeling Henry should do it instead.
In 1946, Lawrence began writing his will; by this point, only a small remnant of the Edward family's wealth was left, especially due to rumors about Blood Edward Island being cursed which would have hurt the company's reputation.
In 1948, Lawrence fell ill and died in the mansion.
Trivia[]
- Lawrence's story appears to be a tragic one with a lot of complex themes about life passions and the negative effects of money in tandem with society.
- He was born in poverty outside his control, which ideally, no child should. As a result, he became a money monger because he never wanted such a life to ever befell him or his family again, perhaps haunted or traumatized by memories of growing up poor.
- He may actually have been creative, given his family descendants, but possibly have only focused on a mining company for his own wealth, giving up any potential dreams. It could be interpreted that one of Lawrence's creative outlets was inventing, engineering or designing puzzles given all the mechanisms and puzzles in the mansion with secret rooms and the like. It could also be interpreted as architecture.
- He built a mansion on a rather secluded island away from society, hinting he might have been rather lonesome. This also ties into the themes of the series, regarding how people often isolate themselves and let relationships wither in favor of work, especially in order to get money. This is seen by how Richard isolates himself from Ashley.
- His fears and concerns about not being wealthy negatively impacted his relationship with his son, who wanted to pursue a financially riskier career in music, to follow his own passions, instead of taking over the stable mining company. The fact that Lawrence was so adamant about Leonard taking over hints Lawrence's early life was tragic.
- There is evidence that Leonard learned a life lesson from Leonard's departure (albeit far too late due to Leonard's death), and Lawrence may have viewed his actions and pressure as something that led to Leonard's death. When Henry and Thomas were born, he called them his "birds" which are animals known for migrating and flying away, hinting that although he still wished for them to take over the mining company, he never expected them to like he did with Leonard, and was open to the possibility of them leaving the island to pursue their dreams. Little things in the mansion also suggest he supported his grandson's passions, such as having an entire room being an art studio for Henry, while Thomas had a library as a novelist. He also let Henry paint him - twice.
- The crippling financial strains also killed the Edward family. Leonard's death and refusal to work for the mining company helped influence its bankruptcy and dried up Lawrence's fortune. Lawrence's lack of money meant Daniel couldn't have his medical expenses paid for, which resulted in an incident where Henry, Thomas and Daniel all died. The family line came to an end when Bill Edward passed away since he was the only living member of the Edward family around.
- Lawrence's room contains a zoetrope, suggesting an interest in animation. D knows a lot about the zoetrope due to wanting to be a movie director himself, hinting this was a shared interest between Lawrence and his great-grandson. However, there is a possibility that this was something D showed his grandfather first, due to D apparently being a mainlander and not living on the island while alive.
