- — Mags to Kyle Hyde
Margaret Patrice, nicknamed Mags, is a major character in Last Window: The Secret of Cape West. She is the landlady of the Cape West Apartments, the building where Kyle Hyde resides. She lives in the only apartment on the first floor, situated next to Lucky's Cafe.
Background[]
At the age of nineteen, she met a saxophonist named George Patrice who was part of a band. Margaret was a dancer at the time. She knew he was a bad person. He was with a different woman each time and used to keep dubious company without expressing shame for himself. Despite all of that, she fell in love with him. They eventually got married but with no children of their own and the two lived together. However, Margaret needed to get used to loving and detesting him. When he attempted to commit crimes, she needed to know the details of everything he was involved in as well and became George's accomplice. The guilt from all of the crimes was chaining them together but it wasn't enough to keep their marriage alive and he was getting more and more distant as his love for her was fading. By that point, she could see that the two of them had no hope for a future together.
One day, her husband was fatally shot by Michael McGrath who broke into the Patrice's family home to kill him as an act of revenge. This unexpected event happened in sync with Margaret's attempt to end George's life with his gun. She chose to do this out of atonement for her impotence to stop him from committing more unforgivable acts, even if she loved him as an 'unrepentant monster'. After the shooting, Michael knocked her out with a gun of his own, then planted the gun in her hand to frame her as George's murderer. Margaret soon regained consciousness and saw the gun she was holding and even George's deceased body. From then on, she felt like a boat lost at sea with no lighthouse to guide her home. After her husband's murder, she was arrested and put on trial. While she was suspected of murdering George, she withheld the truth from the police and lawyers hoping to be found guilty, but there wasn't enough evidence and she received a 'not guilty' verdict. Mags then bought the former Hotel Cape West, using the money he left for her to convert the old hotel into an apartment complex. She bought the place as it was frequented very often by her late husband and herself, and it held a lot of sentimental value.
Her husband was also the leader of Condor, a subsidiary of the crime syndicate Nile that specialized in stolen jewelry. Hotel Cape West served as a sort of headquarters of Condor, as most trades took place in a secret chamber located in the hotel. Mags secretly hoped to buy the hotel to keep her husband's dodgy dealings a secret.
Last Window: The Secret of Cape West[]
Mags had nearly succeeded until near the demolition of the Cape West Apartments, in which Kyle Hyde, who was looking for the Scarlet Star and the truth behind his father's death, managed to uncover the secrets Mags was hiding about her husband and Condor.
Personality[]
Margaret is a reserved, eloquent, busy and elegant. She is often kind, interested and she does give leeway for tenants who have trouble paying their rent, although she does have her limits. Margaret tends to move her hands as a mannerism whenever she talks, showing her refined and elegant personality. She can be quite strict as the owner of the apartment, as she is seen repenting Kyle if the player goes to 4th floor without her permission which leds to a game over.
Margaret is mysterious about her persona and past. She does feel conflicted about it also. Once she is interrogated by Kyle in the end, she cries of relief and sadness lamenting how she had been hiding and enduring all of it for years. Margaret feels the need to be stronger as she rejects Kyle's attempts to help her saying that "she can stand up alone by herself".
Physical Appearance[]
Margaret is a woman in her forties to sixties with sandy blonde hair, pale skin and green eyes. She is often seen in a long black dress with gray sleeves adorned by a black pattern of rose thorns. Her hair is tied to make a wide bun hairstyle except for her fringe which is directed to the left. She also wears jewels and a ring on her angular finger.
Trivia[]
- In the German version of the game (Last Window: Das Geheimnis von Cape West), Margaret is not nicknamed 'Mags', the reason is unknown.
- Margaret's character is paralleled with Kyle's. Also Kyle sees himself in Margaret, which led him to relate to her and also didn't make him see Margaret as a "villain" or a bad person at all. During a confrontation both ended up saying the same words "How could you do something like that!" at the same time.
- Like Kyle with his father's murder and criminal past, Margaret got held down with her own struggles about the death of her husband for years.
- Both characters were marked by the death of a loved one (Kyle with his father and Margaret with her husband).
- Both characters had a dream they didn't continue on the future (Kyle apparently wanted to be a musician or baseball player, Margaret used to be a dancer).
- Both characters also had a connection with a "problematic" loved one, Kyle's father used to rob, Margaret's husband was the leader of the criminal organization Condor.
- There are visible differences with Margaret's in-game artwork and her colorized portrait:
- In-game: Margaret's hair is dark blonde with a dark greenish shade. Her sleeves appear to be colored gray. She also lacks any makeup and has fair skin.
- Colorized portrait: Margaret's hair is sandy blonde. Her sleeves appear to be transparent. She appears with light makeup, light pink lipstick and pink nail paint.
