- "Just what are you implying, Mr. Hyde, that I'm some sort of liar? ...I don't know why you insist on asking me the same thing over and over. I have no idea!"
Marie Rivet (née Porter) is a major character from Last Window: The Secret of Cape West who lives in Apartment 206.
Background[]
Her and Mike's parents passed away when she was young and Mike became her guardian for a while, which suggests that he's the older sibling. Her close relatives also didn't have very much money when she was a child. At one point, she met and fell in love with Peter Rivet. She married him and they used to have a close bond but their relationship began to decline and he eventually died in a car accident.
The insurance fraud investigator Rex Foster is keeping tabs on her, after she claimed insurance money following her husband's death. It is implied that Foster had been tracking Marie for quite a long time, as a photo of Marie at her late brother Mike Porter's funeral showed a younger Rex lurking in the background. The insurance companies were suspicious of Marie as both her brother and husband Peter Rivet had died in similar car accidents, but what they didn't know was that they had worked for Condor, who orchestrated their deaths once their purposes had been fulfilled. Marie is getting threatened by Nile, and visits jewellery stores while being disguised as a woman with a hat and sunglasses, which is seen in the intro of the game. Shortly after she visits one, it gets robbed by Nile.
Last Window: The Secret of Cape West[]
Marie's first appearance in the game is (as the woman with hat and sunglasses) in the intro, and as Marie in Chapter 2, where she accuses Tony Wolf of stealing her diamond ring.
After Marie told Kyle everything on the rooftop (Rex heard everything), Rex decided to help Marie out.
If Kyle decides to go knock on Marie's door on the game's last morning, we learn that Marie already left her apartment and accepted Rex's help.
Appearance[]
Marie is shown wearing a pink cardigan with a light pink shirt underneath, a knee-length black skirt with black heel shoes. She has pale skin, blue eyes and has sandy blonde hair, that reaches her neck. She has a mole on the left side of her mouth.
Personality[]
During Last Window, Marie is serious and well-mannered. She has low tolerance for people like Tony Wolf and according to Betty Meyer, she is known for causing a rampage in the apartment halls when something goes wrong for her. Despite of it, she is able to listen to other people and even let them to prove her wrong, just like the time she let Kyle to investigate her room to find the ring she was looking for. She apparently doesn't have a very good connection with the other guests in the Cape West Apartments and she is late to pay Margaret's housing services. When visiting her room, it's possible to see that Marie likes soda cookies, coffee, tea, makeup and sewing; being able to sew complex pieces of clothing.
Marie does have love and grief for her deceased husband Peter considering that he was very close to her, which is the main reason she came to live in the Cape West Apartments, so she could remember him and their old happy times on the hotel. She was very close to her deceased brother Mike as well, wearing the ring he gifted her, but lately she tried to sell it after learning it was related to Nile.
Marie comments that she feels she can be honest when she is with Kyle and she appreciates his non-judgemental manners. When Rex Foster spied on her, Marie felt scared and paranoid and she begs Kyle to help her.
Relationships[]
Peter Rivet[]
She fell in love with Peter and married him when she was in her early 20s. At first they were a happy couple but eventually the relationship began to fall apart. He used the money Marie got from Mike's insurance policy to start a business venture, which eventually failed. Afterwards, they started arguing repeatedly, mostly about money. The day Marie was going to leave Peter for good, he died in a car accident (similar to her brother's death) on his way to work. She comments to Kyle that while she was sad about her husband's death, in a way, she was "relieved that she won't have to deal with him anymore".
Marie used to travel with him to the hotel before it was converted to the Cape West Apartments. After Peter's death, Marie decided to live in Cape West Apartments as a way to remember Peter, who loved the place.
Mike Porter[]
Mike raised Marie after their parents died when she was young, which made him her guardian for a while. One day, after Mike came from work at the hotel, he had a terrible wound. When Marie asked about it over and over again, he told her that there would be secrets he would have to keep from her, and made her promise not to ask about his work, or he would be forced to leave her. She agreed and kept the promise until his death.
Mike and Peter discovered Kathy McGrath's body on Room 404 at the closing party of the hotel. He took her diamond ring and gave it to Marie. Soon after, he died on a car accident. He had a life insurance policy of which his sister was the sole beneficiary.
Kyle Hyde[]
Marie was open to the idea of talking with Kyle. She once commented that she liked to talk with him as he, for a reason, brought her tranquility. She asked Kyle to believe her story instead of Rex's.
Rex Foster[]
Marie was fearful of Rex, as he was secretly stalking and investigating her. After Rex offered Marie help, she accepted his offer.
Tony Wolf[]
Marie didn't like Tony and was suspicious of him. She accused him of stealing her ring just because of his personality, looks and the low amount of money in his possession, claiming that he is a criminal.
Trivia[]
- It's hinted that her maiden name is Porter.
- If Kyle sells Marie a snow globe, she states that she wanted this object when she was little but wasn't able to because her family members (such as Mike) couldn't afford one because they didn't have much cash.
