Martin Summer is a guest in Hotel Dusk: Room 215 and has significance in the Kyle Hyde Saga. He is staying in Room 211 (Honor). He is also an author and knew Alan Parker.
Background[]
Summer was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1929. He was raised by his father, although mentioned his mother had a lack of involvement in his life, for unknown reasons.
After graduating from university, Summer worked in the editorial department of the magazine "Los Angeles Beat". As an interview reporter, he has worked on interview articles for many artists, and started his creative activities.
Summer and Alan Parker.
Summer frequented the same café as Alan and they knew each other's faces well. One day, they struck up a conversation, and soon after became fast friends. Their lives were very strikingly similar; they were the same age, both reporters, were both raised by their fathers, and both longed to be novelists. Alan showed Summer a manuscript that he planned to enter in a writing contest, but Martin took it home, wrote it up himself, and entered it in the contest under his own name. Summer won and Alan disappeared, vanishing one day without a trace. In 1969, he won the grand prize of the prize novel for his premier work The Secret Word and made a spectacular debut as a writer.
By 1979, he had released five works, although none of them were as popular as The Secret Word, with Rosa Fox calling him a one-hit wonder.
Hotel Dusk: Room 215[]
Kyle confronting Summer about his plagiarism.
Martin crosses paths with Kyle Hyde in the hotel, as Summer has Kyle's correct package after they were accidentally switched by Louie. Rosa is a big fan of Summer and asks for Kyle to get an autograph for her.
Kyle gradually discovers Martin is a plagiarist who stole Alan's work for The Secret Word. Kyle confronts Summer who reluctantly tells the truth, but is relieved to get some of his guilt off his chest. Summer decides to change his ways and reunite with Alan to apologize.
After Hotel Dusk[]
There was silence for the next ten years, but he resumed his creative activities in 1990. His next work, titled "Yoruno Yukue", was announced in 1998. It was well-received and he became one of the best-selling authors once again.
In recent years, he has also worked on screenplays and columns for movies, and has demonstrated his versatility. In 2001, Summer published a new novel titled "Last Window: The Secret of Cape West". Prior to the release of the novel, he made several columns for the "Los Angeles Beat", one in January 25 1999 titled "The Man I Met at Hotel Dusk", and another in February 25 2001, titled "A Few Facts about Kyle Hyde". Despite not appearing in Last Window: The Secret of Cape West, he's credited as the author of the in-game novel of the same name and appears in the cover flap as an aged man. He also makes a cameo in a Flipnote animated series, spying on Kyle and taking notes.
Personality[]
Martin is a polite and amiable person who has a huge habit of speaking in eloquent prose sentences which confuses or irritates everyone like Melissa, Dunning or Kyle who calls him a "windbag" in his own mind. He takes pleasure in hearing praises about his most popular work, "The Secret Word", such as with Rosa who is a huge fan of him and also owns a copy of it.
As a writer of renown, he is no stranger to signatures, as he also signs Rosa’s copy at her request, despite the unusual location. The way he writes the "er" in "Summer" is distinct, and he claims to have written that way since he was a child. However, Rosa posits that his handwriting indicates that he is an audacious liar and somewhat of a coward.
When Kyle confronts him on the truth regarding the notebook and fountain pen's ownership, Martin abruptly becomes more belligerent and defensive against Kyle (because he suspects that Kyle is getting close to uncovering his own dark secret). But as Kyle reassures him that he has no interest in blackmailing nor exposing him and simply wants the truth, he mellows out and reluctantly confesses the truth, admitting that while at first he was happy to fulfil his dream after plagiarizing Alan's work over the past ten years, he expresses intense guilt and remorse over this unforgivable act. Later, he elaborates that he's determined to confess in public in order to carry out the search for Alan, hoping the latter will have a heart to forgive him.

Quotes[]
- "The truth? The truth is something I fear, lest it be discovered and exposed to all. It haunts me, and has kept me from even one restful night these past ten years. Mr. Hyde... If I could take the secrets I've kept hidden away in my soul... If for one moment I could share them with another human being... It might not be too late. I might yet be able to make a fresh start."
