Michael McGrath was the manager who ran Hotel Cape West, which later became the Cape West Apartments. He is the husband of Kathy McGrath and late father of Will McGrath.
Background[]
While in their late teens or early twenties, he and Kathy had a son named Will after they met and got together. The couple raised him while being married. However, Will and his father did not see eye to eye which resulted in Will leaving the family home when he was young. When Michael was working at Hotel Cape West, a safecracker called Chris Hyde snuck into the hotel to search for the Scarlet Star. Upon finding out about this, his friend George Patrice lets Michael murder Chris on his behalf to protect it and shot the thief with his handgun. Then, Chris' deceased body was stored in a chest freezer for two days. The two Hotel Cape West employees Mike Porter and Peter Rivet soon dumped his corpse in a downtown parking lot. Eventually, his corpse was discovered there as well. Michael feeling remorseful, not only for involving himself with Condor to sell stolen jewels but also killing a person for the first time, hid the Scarlet Star and lied to George about the Scarlet Star being stolen as he plans to leave Condor for good. Sometime after the theft of the Scarlet Star, Michael told his son about it.
In 1967, Michael hosted a party at Hotel Cape West to celebrate its closure and George had killed Kathy while at the hotel (much to Michael's devastation). After her murder, George attended Kathy's funeral and even Will as well, which was the second time he saw his son. Michael however was displeased that George went to the funeral.
One day, George was fatally shot by Michael's gun. He broke into the Patrice's family home to kill George as an act of revenge (presumably because of Kathy's demise). Then, Michael knocked George's wife, Margaret out cold then planted his own gun in her hand to frame her as George's murderer. She was arrested and put on trial afterwards.
Three years prior to the events of Last Window, he collapsed due to an illness. Will who hadn't seen his father in ten years, saw him in a weakened state. As Michael was dying, he apologized to Will and told him that Kathy tragically died because of George. Although there was no evidence to prove it, he was sure that George was the culprit. He thrusted a torn old postcard into his son's hands and also said that it's a clue to find the Scarlet Star. In Michael's dying breath, attempted to spit out the name of the safecracker who stole the same jewel, but he was struggling to do so. Unfortunately for him though, he passed away before he could reveal it.
